    About BBQ Chicken Flatbread

This homemade flatbread pizza doubles as one of my favorite easy dinner recipes and game day appetizers! It's quick and fun to make for a variety of occasions. I love this recipe because it's versatile for many occasions - a game day snack, easy weeknight dinner, or family pizza night! Plus, it's a healthy option and budget-friendly compared to ordering takeout.

When football season rolls around and I host watch parties, this BBQ chicken flatbread pizza is always on my menu. This delicious and satisfying snack is a family favorite and crowd-pleaser.

Chicken BBQ flatbread is fun to make! I like to get my friends and family involved when assembling the pizza. Making this store bought flatbread pizza recipe is kid-friendly and even my husband and I love to cook this for date night at home.

    Ingredients

Ingredients needed to make a chicken flatbread with bbq sauce are on a marble countertop.
    • Flatbread: I love the convivence of using store-bought flatbread or naan bread as pizza crust.
    • BBQ sauce: Use your favorite store-bought version or make your own Texas BBQ sauce recipe when making this barbecue chicken pizza.
    • Chicken: You will find a variety of ways to make bbq chicken in the post below and recipe card notes.
    • Cheese: I use a combination of mozzarella, cheddar and parmesan when making this recipe. Using multiple types of cheese in this BBQ chicken flatbread gives it extra depth of flavor.
    • Red onion: The spicy and sweet taste of red onions pairs perfectly with the flavor combination of chicken and barbecue sauce.
    • Cilantro: The fresh, citrus taste of cilantro adds a pop of color and flavor to these rich pizza toppings.

    Recommended Tools

    • I use a silicone pastry brush to brush garlic butter sauce on the edges of the crust.
    • Bake this flatbread BBQ Chicken pizza on a baking sheet or a pizza stone.
    • Slice the flatbread with this handy dandy pizza cutter wheel.

    Variations

    • You can make this recipe using store-bought flatbread, naan bread, or homemade pizza dough.
    • If you don't like the taste of cilantro, use green onions instead.
    • For more pizza topping ideas, try adding crispy bacon, bell peppers, or red pepper flakes.

    BBQ Chicken (3 Ways)

When I cook this recipe, I usually make BBQ chicken in the crockpot. This method takes the longest, but the chicken absorbs the BBQ flavor best. Plus, it makes plenty to have leftover shredded chicken for other recipes. Using shredded rotisserie chicken or leftover cooked chicken are the quickest methods.

    1. Crockpot (slow cooker) - Add 1-2 pounds of chicken breasts to a crockpot with a jar of BBQ sauce. Cook on high for two and a half hours. Take the chicken out of the slow cooker and shred it using two forks to pull apart the meat. Add the shredded chicken back to the crockpot and stir to soak up all the sauce. Store leftover BBQ chicken in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
    2. Rotisserie - Purchase a whole rotisserie chicken at the grocery store. Break down the chicken. Shred or cut the meat into bite sized pieces then toss in BBQ sauce.
    3. Leftover chicken - This is one of my favorite recipes to use up leftover chicken. Shred or chop the cooked meat and toss it with BBQ sauce.

How to Make BBQ Chicken Flatbread

Have fun with making this easy BBQ chicken flatbread recipe - you don't need to measure all of the ingredients. I usually eyeball the ingredients based on my personal preferences. Zesty BBQ sauce, juicy chicken, red onions, and cilantro are a delicious flavor combination. This chicken flatbread pizza comes together quickly, so get ready to dig in!

In a large glass bowl, chopped chicken is getting tossed in bbq sauce.

Step 1: Choose to make BBQ chicken in the crockpot or use pre-cooked chicken. If you are using cooked chicken, place shredded or chopped chicken in a bowl and toss it in BBQ sauce.

Step 2: Combine melted butter, garlic powder, and parmesan cheese to make a garlic butter for the crust. Place flatbread on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the garlic butter on the edges of the crust.

Two flatbread crusts topped with bbq sauce are on a baking sheet.

Step 3: Add a layer of BBQ sauce to the flatbread leaving a rim around the edges for the crust.

Two flatbread crusts on a baking tray with bbq sauce, chicken, red onions, and cheese.

Step 4: Evenly spread shredded chicken, red onions, and cheese on the flatbread and bake. Watch the pizza carefully while baking as cook times may vary using different sizes or brands.

Step 5: After baking, sprinkle with chopped cilantro and parmesan cheese. Let the BBQ chicken flatbread sit for a couple minutes before slicing with a pizza cutter.

    Expert Tips

For even cooking: Thinly slice ingredients and shred or chop chicken into small pieces.

Layers: Start with a thin layer of BBQ sauce, followed by the chicken and other toppings. Sprinkle cheese evenly over the top to help hold everything together.

Don't overload with toppings: While it may be tempting to pile on the toppings, less is often more when it comes to flatbread pizza. Overloading can lead to a soggy crust and uneven cooking.

    Ingredients

    • 2 store-bought flatbread crusts or naan bread
    • 1 cup chicken cooked and chopped into bite sized pieces
    • 1 ½ cups Texas BBQ sauce recipe or store-bought
    • ½ cup mozzarella cheese shredded
    • ½ cup cheddar cheese shredded
    • ¼ cup red onion thinly sliced
    • Optional toppings: cilantro, red pepper flakes, and parmesan

    Garlic Butter Crust

    • 1 Tablespoon butter melted
    • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon parmesan cheese grated

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 425 °F. Place flatbread on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    • In a bowl, add chicken and 1 cup of BBQ sauce. Stir to coat chicken in sauce and set aside. (see notes for cooking options)
    • In a small bowl, combine garlic butter crust ingredients. Using a pastry brush, brush the garlic butter around the edges of the flatbread.
    • Add a layer of ¼ cup barbecue sauce to each flatbread leaving a rim around the edges for the crust. Next, add layers of cheddar and mozzarella cheese over the sauce.
    • Spread BBQ chicken and red onions evenly on each flatbread and top with more cheese. Bake at 425°F for 8-10 minutes. Watch closely towards the end of baking to ensure the crust doesn't burn.
    • Let the flatbread sit for a couple minutes before slicing. Top with chopped cilantro, red pepper flakes, parmesan, and a drizzle of BBQ sauce, if desired. Serve immediately.

    Notes

    • If you cook more than one flatbread at a time or use a different size, cook times will vary. Watch oven closely in the last couple minutes of baking to avoid burning the crust.
    • You don't need to measure all of the ingredients. I usually just eyeball it based on my personal preferences.
    • Cooked chicken 3 ways:
      • Slow Cooker Method: Place chicken breasts in a slow cooker along with a jar of BBQ sauce. Cook on high for two and a half hours. Once done, remove the chicken from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks. Return the shredded chicken to the slow cooker and mix well to coat it in the sauce.
      • Rotisserie Chicken Method: Purchase a whole rotisserie chicken from the grocery store. Disassemble the chicken and shred or chop the meat into bite-sized pieces.
      • Leftover Chicken Method: Utilize leftover chicken by shredding or chopping it into smaller pieces.
