What is Simple Syrup?

At its core, simple syrup is a liquid sweetener made by dissolving sugar in water. With a neutral taste, it's a perfect canvas for infusing flavors - like blackberry!

The standard formula for simple syrup is equal parts water to sugar, or a 1:1 ratio. For example, one cup of water would be combined with one cup of sugar. The water and sugar are heated and simmered to dissolve into a syrup.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use frozen blackberries?

Absolutely! Frozen blackberries work well in this homemade simple syrup and can be used year-round.

How much syrup do I need in a drink?

This depends on the drink you are making and your taste preference. I usually add ½ to 1 ounce of syrup per drink.

Is it necessary to strain simple syrup after simmering?

Yes, if you are making a flavored simple syrup with berries or herbs, straining removes the seeds and solids to ensure a smooth consistency. Press the berries to extract all the flavors.

Storage

Once cooled, transfer the syrup to a glass jar or container with a tight-sealing lid. Store it in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks to maintain its freshness.

If you've made a larger batch, consider freezing smaller portions in ice cube trays for convenient future use.
