About Nutella Stuffed Pancakes
Easy to make: Despite their decadent appearance, stuffed pancakes are surprisingly easy to make, requiring just a few simple ingredients and basic cooking techniques. After freezing discs of Nutella the night before, this recipe comes together in under 30 minutes!
Creative breakfast idea: Making these pancakes stuffed with Nutella allows for creativity in the kitchen. This is a fun recipe to make with your significant other or kids.
Crowd-pleaser: Whether you're serving them for a weekend brunch or a special occasion breakfast, Nutella pancakes are sure to be a hit with both kids and adults alike.
Ingredients
- Nutella: The star ingredient! Nutella, a chocolate hazelnut spread, adds a rich flavor and creamy texture to the pancakes, creating a filling that contrasts perfectly with fluffy pancakes.
- Pancake batter: I save time by using a pre-made pancake mix like Krusteaz brand or this one from Kodiack Cakes for an added boost of protein and fewer carbs. (Note: you may need eggs)
- Butter or oil: This prevents sticking and ensures that the pancakes cook evenly and develop a golden-brown crust on the outside.
- Optional toppings: strawberries, maple syrup, or our simple berry compote.
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Variations
Peanut butter: Instead of using the chocolate spread, freeze discs of peanut butter to make peanut butter stuffed pancakes.
Add bananas: Freeze sliced bananas with the Nutella discs for a classic flavor combination or simply top the finished pancakes with slices of banana.
Berries: Creamy Nutella and fruit are a delicious flavor combination. We especially love pairing Nutella pancakes with strawberries, raspberries, or drizzling our mixed berry compote over the top instead of using maple syrup.

How to Make Nutella Pancakes
If you haven't had your morning coffee yet, no problem! This recipe for Nutella pancakes is super simple to make and ready in under 30 minutes!
To freeze Nutella: The night before, scoop a large tablespoon of creamy Nutella on to a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Spread the lump with the back of the spoon to form discs of Nutella. Repeat this for as many pancakes as you plan to make then place the baking tray in the freezer.
Make pancake batter: When you are ready to start cooking, follow the pre-made pancake mixture instructions by adding wet ingredients to dry ingredients then whisk batter in a large bowl until desired consistency is reached.
Note: You will need to make extra pancake batter, for example, if you are making 4 pancakes, you will need enough batter for 6 pancakes.
To make stuffed Nutella pancakes: Heat a griddle or skillet to medium heat and add oil or butter. Spoon about ¼ cup of pancake batter onto the skillet. Retrieve frozen Nutella discs from the freezer and place one in the center of the pancake batter. Then pour more batter on top to cover the disc.
Cook until tiny bubbles form along the edges of the pancake. Gently flip the Nutella filled pancake and cook on the other side until it's cooked through and golden-brown. Repeat these steps until all pancakes are made and serve immediately.
Expert Tips
Work in batches: If left out too long, the frozen Nutella discs will start to thaw making them difficult to handle. I like to take one or two discs out at a time while keeping the others in the freezer until ready to use.
Freezing: For best results, freeze Nutella the night before or 1-2 hours before making this recipe to ensure it has time to get solid. To ensure you're always ready to make this recipe, make extra Nutella discs to keep in the freezer. Transfer Nutella to an airtight container suitable for freezing to prevent freezer burn and absorption of odors.
Make extra batter: Since we are filling pancakes with Nutella, prepare additional pancake batter. For example, if you plan to make 4 stuffed pancakes, ensure you have enough batter for 6 pancakes.
Using butter vs oil: Butter adds a rich flavor and can help create a golden-brown crust on the pancakes. However, butter has a lower smoke point compared to oil, so it may burn more easily at higher temperatures. Some people prefer the taste of butter in their pancakes, while others prefer the neutral flavor of oil. Additionally, using a combination of both butter and oil can offer the best of both worlds.

Equipment
- Griddle or skillet
- Baking Sheet lined with parchment paper
Ingredients
- Pancake batter I use Krusteaz brand
- ½ cup Nutella
- 1 Tablespoon butter or non-stick cooking spray
- Optional toppings: maple syrup, strawberries, berry compote
Instructions
- The night before (or at least 1 hour before making): line a baking sheet with parchment paper and scoop 1½ tablespoons of Nutella onto the paper. Form the Nutella in the shape of a round disc. Repeat until 4 discs have been formed and put them in the freezer until the Nutella is frozen solid. Gently peel from parchment paper when ready to use.
- Make pancake batter according to package directions. Since we are stuffing the pancakes, prepare extra batter. Make enough for about 6 pancakes.
- Heat the skillet or griddle to medium heat and melt butter.
- Pour about ¼ cup of pancake batter on the pan. Retrieve one Nutella disc from the freezer and place it in the center of the pancake batter. Then spoon more batter on top to cover the disc.
- Cook the pancake until bubbles appear around the edges and the bottom is golden, about 2-3 minutes. Gently flip the pancake and cook another 2 minutes until cooked through.
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each pancake.
Notes
- Work in batches and keep Nutella discs in the freezer until ready to use. They will soften quickly at room temperature and can become hard to handle. I recommend removing one or two discs at a time while keeping the rest in the freezer until you're ready to use them.
- To prevent Nutella from leaking out the sides of the pancake, ensure that the top layer of pancake batter completely covers the dollop of Nutella.
- Topping ideas: strawberries, bananas, maple syrup, or mixed berry compote.
