If it's the weekend, you can bet French toast is cooking in my kitchen. This breakfast classic is a family favorite in our home. Since we enjoy it so often, I love to get creative and mix things up with new flavors, like tiramisu French toast.
When fall arrives and Trader Joe's stocks their seasonal goodies, I always grab a loaf of pumpkin brioche bread. My husband and I have been whipping up pumpkin French toast for years, and it's one of our all-time favorite fall recipes. Making it always signals the start of the season for us.
Ingredients for Pumpkin Brioche French Toast
- Loaf of Pumpkin Brioche Bread: I use a loaf of 'Pumpkin Brioche Twist' from Trader Joe's. Brioche is a French bread that is soft, buttery, and slightly sweet. You can use pumpkin brioche or plain brioche for this recipe. In my opinion, brioche makes the best French toast recipe.
- Milk: Whole milk or heavy cream are best when making French toast because they will adhere to the bread better. Although almond milk is fine in a pinch, pick the dairy of your choice.
- Sugar: Sugar sweetens the batter and helps create a caramelized surface on the French toast. It balances the spices and enhances the overall flavor, making each bite deliciously sweet with a slight crunch. You can use white or brown sugar.
- Eggs: Eggs are crucial for binding the ingredients together and giving the French toast its rich and custardy texture.
- Butter: Butter adds a rich flavor and helps achieve a golden-brown crust on the French toast.
- Vanilla Extract: Vanilla extract adds a fragrant, sweet aroma and a subtle flavor that complements the pumpkin spice and sugar.
- Pumpkin Pie Spice: Pumpkin spice infuses the French toast with warm, autumnal flavors. This blend of spices (typically including cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves) adds depth and a seasonal twist to the dish.
Flavor Variations
Simply switch out pumpkin brioche for plain brioche and this delicious recipe is ready to cook any time of year!
Cinnamon French toast: Instead of using pumpkin pie spice, use only cinnamon for a sweet flavor that is delicious for breakfast all year round.
Toppings: After I drizzle maple syrup over the pumpkin French toast, I like to add a dollop of whipped cream or ice cream for an extra decadent breakfast. Sprinkle with walnuts or pecans for an added crunch.
