What is a Compote?

The definition of a compote is: a dessert of fruit cooked in syrup. The fruit is usually left whole or in large pieces as it's cooked down into a jam-like sauce.

You can use just about any fruit to make a compote. Berries are the fastest and easiest fruit to make into a compote with because they cook down very quickly.

This compote recipe is made with whole raspberries and roughly chopped strawberries. I like to enjoy this Simple & Quick Berry Compote on pancakes, especially my Stuffed Nutella Pancakes, but it's also a perfect addition to toast, ice cream, pie, and the list goes on and on.

Ingredients

  • Fruit of choice - berries will cook down the quickest. For this recipe I use a mix of raspberries and strawberries.
  • Maple syrup

How to Make a Berry Compote

First, decide what fruit you want to make a compote with. I chose raspberries and strawberries for this recipe. If you are using the same, keep the raspberries whole and roughly chop the strawberries into medium-sized chunks.

Add water, non-stick cooking spray, or butter to the bottom of a small saucepot. This will keep the berries from sticking to the bottom.

Next, throw in the berries and cook on medium-high heat until the berries start to break down; about 5 minutes. You should be stirring frequently.

Once you notice the berries breaking down, it's time to add the maple syrup. Simmer for about 10 minutes longer, stirring frequently, and your done! What are you going to add your Simple and Quick Berry Compote to?
