A Note from Angela

Boneless skinless chicken thighs are one of my favorite cuts of chicken to cook in the air fryer. They're naturally more flavorful and forgiving than chicken breasts, which means they stay juicy and tender without much effort. That alone makes them a lifesaver on busy weeknights.

I make air fried chicken thighs for dinner at least once a week because it's one of those recipes I can make almost without thinking. The chicken cooks in about 15 minutes, the seasoning is made with simple pantry spices I always have on hand, and while the air fryer does its thing, I can quickly throw together a side dish and have dinner on the table fast.

I also love how versatile these chicken thighs are. Some nights I serve them over jalapeno rice with creamy poblano sauce for an easy Tex-Mex dinner, and other nights I slice them up for tacos, burrito bowls, or salads.

Ingredient Notes

A few simple ingredients are all you need to make these air fryer chicken thighs seriously flavorful. Each ingredient plays an important role in building juicy texture, crispy edges, and bold smoky flavor.

Ingredients needed to make chicken thighs in the air fryer.
  • Chicken thighs are naturally richer and more flavorful than chicken breasts because they contain slightly more fat, which helps keep the meat juicy during cooking. They're also much more forgiving in the air fryer and less likely to dry out. I specifically use boneless skinless chicken thighs because they cook quick, look for thighs that are similar in size so they cook evenly.
  • The seasoning blend in this recipe was designed to build bold flavor fast without needing a marinade. Smoked paprika adds smoky depth, while brown sugar helps the outside caramelize as the chicken cooks. Garlic powder and onion powder create the savory backbone.
  • A light coating of olive oil helps the seasoning stick to the chicken while also encouraging browning and caramelization in the air fryer. It's one of the keys to getting those crispy golden edges without breading.

Flavor Variations

  • Make it spicy! Add ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the seasoning blend for a kick of spice.
  • Switch up the seasoning! I like to make these air fryer skinless chicken thighs with my DIY taco seasoning or homemade blackened seasoning.
  • Instead of using oil and seasonings, coat chicken in a sauce, like Buffalo sauce, homemade BBQ sauce, or Teriyaki sauce.

How to Make Air Fryer Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs

These air fried chicken thighs are one of my favorite weeknight dinners because they're fast, flavorful, and almost impossible to mess up. The air fryer gives the outside a crispy, caramelized crust while keeping the inside juicy and tender.

Step 3: Arrange the boneless skinless chicken thighs in a single layer in the air fryer basket with a little space between each piece. Avoid overcrowding the basket or the chicken will steam instead of crisp.

Step 4: Air fry chicken thighs, flipping halfway through cooking so both sides develop those crispy, golden edges.

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Chicken Thighs

  • Preheat the air fryer while you prepare the chicken. Starting with a hot air fryer helps the chicken begin crisping immediately instead of slowly steaming.
  • Pat the chicken dry with paper towels before seasoning. This step is one of the biggest secrets to getting golden, crispy edges. Excess moisture prevents browning and keeps the seasoning from sticking properly.
  • For the crispiest edges, avoid overcrowding the basket and leave a little space around each chicken thigh so the hot air can circulate properly.
  • Let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat instead of running out onto the cutting board.
  • If your chicken thighs are especially small or large, cooking time may vary slightly. I always recommend using a meat thermometer for perfectly juicy chicken every time.

How Long to Cook Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs in the Air Fryer

Air fryer boneless skinless chicken thighs typically cook at 380°F for 10-12 minutes depending on their size and thickness.

Smaller chicken thighs may finish cooking closer to 10 minutes, while larger or thicker thighs may need a couple extra minutes. Flip the chicken halfway through cooking so both sides develop crispy golden edges.

Using an instant-read meat thermometer is the best way to guarantee juicy chicken every time without overcooking. The chicken is fully cooked when the internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part.

Best Temperature for Air Fryer Chicken Thighs

I recommend cooking boneless skinless chicken thighs at 380°F in the air fryer. This temperature gives the chicken enough heat to develop crispy caramelized edges while still keeping the inside juicy and tender.

Cooking at a lower temperature can cause the chicken to steam instead of brown, while higher temperatures may dry out the outside before the center fully cooks. At 380°F, the chicken cooks evenly and develops the best texture.

Recipe FAQs

Why are my air fryer chicken thighs dry?

Air fryer chicken thighs usually turn out dry when they are overcooked or cooked at too high of a temperature. Using a meat thermometer is the best way to prevent dry chicken. Boneless skinless chicken thighs are done cooking once they reach 165°F internally.

How do you get crispy chicken thighs in the air fryer?

To get crispy chicken thighs in the air fryer, pat the chicken dry before seasoning, lightly coat it with oil, and cook the thighs in a preheated air fryer. Leaving space between each piece of chicken also helps the hot air circulate properly for better browning.

Can you cook frozen chicken thighs in the air fryer?

Yes, you can cook frozen chicken thighs in the air fryer, although fresh or thawed chicken will develop better browning and crispier edges. Frozen chicken thighs take longer to cook so cooking times will vary.

Serving Suggestions

The smoky seasoning and crispy edges of these chicken thighs pair well with a variety of side dishes. For an easy dinner, serve with rice, a simple salad, or your favorite vegetables.

I also love pairing them with jalapeno mac and cheese or jalapeno popper potato salad when I want something extra cozy and comforting.

Looking for more easy chicken dinner ideas? A few other favorites I make on repeat are my creamy baked chicken orzo recipe, cheesy chicken and rice, and crispy panko crusted chicken. They're all simple, family-friendly meals that don't require a ton of effort to taste delicious.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover chicken thighs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. I love keeping a batch in the fridge for easy lunches, tacos, salads, and quick weeknight dinners throughout the week.

For the best texture, reheat the chicken in the air fryer at 350°F for 3 minutes or until warmed through. This helps bring back those crispy caramelized edges. If you're in a hurry, the microwave works too. Heat for 60-90 seconds or until warm.

You can also freeze cooked chicken thighs for up to 3 months. Let the chicken cool completely before storing in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Just made this tonight, Only thing I added was a bit of oregano to add more flavor. Everything else was the same. Smells heavenly I know it will be delicious when we get to eat it. Serving with rice and broccoli florets.

    1. Thanks for the feedback. I'm happy you liked the seasoning. My favorite method is to reheat chicken thighs in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-5 minutes until warm. You can also heat them in the microwave for 60-90 seconds or covered on the stovetop with a splash of chicken broth.
